Pacific Meridional Modes without Equatorial Pacific Influence

چکیده
Abstract Investigating Pacific Meridional Modes (PMM) without the influence of tropical variability is technically difficult if based on observations or fully coupled model simulations due to their overlapping spatial structures. To confront this issue, present study investigates both North (NPMM) and South PMM (SPMM) in terms associated atmospheric forcing response processes a mechanically decoupled climate simulation. In experiment, climatological wind stress prescribed over Pacific, which effectively removes dynamically (e.g., El Niño-Southern Oscillation). Interannual NPMM experiment forced not only by Oscillation, but also tripole (NPT) pattern internal variability, primarily forces decadal variability. SPMM partly Oscillation. turn, interannual can excite teleconnections Northern Hemisphere extratropics influencing meridional displacement intertropical convergence zone throughout whole year. Similarly, Southern extending/shrinking all seasons. Our results highlight new poleward pathway feed back extratropical climate, addition equatorward

Equatorial signatures of the Pacific Meridional Modes: Dependence on mean climate state
Extratropical atmospheric variability can impact tropical climate in the Pacific sector via the Pacific Meridional Modes (PMMs). The South PMM (SPMM) has a larger equatorial signature than the North PMM (NPMM) for the same amount of extratropical variability. Here we explain this interhemispheric asymmetry using an atmospheric general circulationmodel coupled to a slab ocean model. By imposing ...
متن کاملForecasting Ocean Chlorophyll in the Equatorial Pacific
Using a global ocean biogeochemical model combined with a forecast of physical oceanic and atmospheric variables from the NASA Global Modeling and Assimilation Office, we assess the skill of a chlorophyll concentrations forecast in the Equatorial Pacific for the period 2012-2015 with a focus on the forecast of the onset of the 2015 El Niño event. Using a series of retrospective 9-month hindcast...
متن کاملPacific Equatorial Age Transect (PEAT): Summary
As the largest ocean, the Pacific is intricately linked to major changes in the global climate system that took place during the Cenozoic. Throughout the Cenozoic the Pacific plate has had a northward component. Thus, the Pacific is unique, in that the thick sediment bulge of biogenic-rich deposits from the currently narrowly focused zone of equatorial upwelling is slowly moving away from the e...

During the Line Islands Experiment in spring 1967, surface shortwave and net radiation was continuously recorded a t Palmyra, and Suomi-Kuhn infrared radiationsondes were released daily at the islands of Palmyra, (5’53’ N., 162’05’ W.) and Christmas (1’59’ N., 157’22’ W.) as part of an extensive surface and upper air observation program. Data are evaluated in terms of the diurnal march of the s...
متن کاملCopepod grazing in the equatorial Pacific
The vertical distribution of copepod (>64 pm) grazing was mcasurcd on the equator at 14O”W during March/ April (19 d) and October 1992 (21 d). El NiAo conditions prevailed during the March/April time series. Hydrographic variables were similar to the climatological mean during the October time series.,We found higher weight-specific copepod filtration rates in October when mixed-layer temperatu...
